Concise Selina Solutions for Class 7 maths Chapter 5 Exponents (Including Laws of Exponents)

The exponent of a number says how many times to use that number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64. (The exponent "2" says to use the 8 two times in a multiplication.) X raised to Y means that x is multiplied by itself y times.

Rule: - a n = a × a × ... × a

Contents: - "n" times and "a" is the base and n is the exponent.

Laws of Exponents:-

  1. When multiplying like bases, keep the base the same and add the exponents.
  1. When raising a base with power to another power, keep the base the same and multiply the exponents.
  1. When dividing like bases, keep the base the same and subtract the denominator exponent from the numerator exponent.
  1. When there are two or more exponents and only one base, multiply the exponents.
