The population is the total number of people in a particular area such as city, country or any other place. Population in the world is currently (2019-2020) growing at a rate of around 1.08% per year (down from 1.10% in 2018, 1.12% in 2017 and 1.14% in 2016). The current average population increase is estimated at 82 million people per year. The life expectancy of an individual increased after Indian independence, with the building of hospitals, educating people about health and immunisation programmes conducted by the government. It resulted in the population explosion, as the birth rate remained almost the same. Population explosion can lead to exhaustion of India’s economic and natural resources. Many people may not even get basic facilities such as shelter, food, and clothes. To check population growth, the government of India took various measures such as the introduction of various contraceptive methods, increasing the marriageable age for both boys and girls and so on.
