NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Chemistry Chapter 4 Carbon and its Compounds

Carbon is the basis for all living organisms and a versatile element. It is tetravalent and has the property of catenation. Carbon forms covalent bonds by sharing electrons between two atoms and achieves filled outermost shell. It forms covalent bonds with oxygen, chlorine, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur and itself. It can form double and triple bond compounds. There exist three types of carbon chains viz, branched, ring and straight. Carbon is considered as a significant source of fuel. Ethanoic acid and ethanol are carbon compounds which are essential and used in our daily lives. The behaviour of detergents and soaps is because of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups in which help in the emulsification of oily dirt and removes it. Organic compounds are categorized into saturated and unsaturated carbon compounds. Saturated compounds are compounds with only a single bond. Unsaturated carbon compounds are compounds with a double or triple bond. Ethanol and ethanoic acid are carbon compounds of importance in our daily lives. The chapter explains some of the chemical properties of carbon compounds such as combustion, oxidation, addition reaction, substitution reaction.
