A square of an integer is the product of some integer with itself. Similarly, the square root of a number is an integer which when multiplied by itself give this number. In this topic, we will increase our understanding of squares, square roots, and will learn about ways of finding them. Finding the square root of a number is the inverse operation of squaring that number. Remember, the square of a number is that number times itself. The perfect squares are the squares of the whole numbers. The square root of a number, n, written below is the number that gives n when multiplied by itself.

Example: 5 × 5 = 25; 25 is the square of 5

  1. The square root of a given number x is the number whose square is x
  2. The symbol of the square root is √
  3. Example: √64 = 8

 

 

A natural number which is the square of some natural number, is called perfect square or square number. If p and q are natural numbers such that p = q2, then p is a perfect square of q.
